Mould is a natural part of the world we live in. Mould fulfils its role in the food chain; without mould, the ecosystem would crumble.

However, like everything, you need balance. Too much mould can cause serious problems.

All moulds on the planet can be considered dangerous when talking about concentration levels. The human body can handle a certain amount of mould before it is overwhelmed and begins to break. The major problem is that the human body can take different amounts of mould. This is why we talk about mould being dangerous in terms of concentration.

Black mould is considered and widely known as the most dangerous mould because black mould starts to damage the human body even at low concentration levels.

Most people, though, do not get sick from Black mould. Typically the moulds that are affecting them are the standard environmental mould. Moulds that you find in the dirt, plants, water and the wind.

Acidic products like vinegar and Baking soda will erode. If you use vinegar in your dishwasher, as is often cited on social media, you may find that your machine internals and rubbers start to deteriorate faster.
Filtration methods like filters, carbon filters, photovoltaic filters, HEPA filters etc., do the job of filtering. This means that some things get through. What gets through is determined by the size of the filter. Mould is so tiny that they will always be able to get through. Having run a pharmaceutical manufacturing entity, I can tell you that it does get through.

There are thousands of known species of moulds, which have diverse lifestyles. They all require moisture for growth, and some live in aquatic environments.

What does mould live on?

Like all fungi, moulds derive energy through the organic matter they live in. Typically, moulds secrete enzymes, mainly from the hyphal tips. These enzymes degrade complex biopolymers such as starch, cellulose and lignin into simpler substances that the hyphae can absorb. In this way, moulds play a significant role in causing the decomposition of organic material, enabling the recycling of nutrients throughout ecosystems.

Moulds also synthesize mycotoxins and siderophores, which, together with lytic enzymes, inhibit the growth of competing microorganisms. Some moulds produce tiny, hydrophobic spores that are adapted for wind dispersal and may remain airborne for long periods
Other mould spores have slimy sheaths and are more suited to water dispersal
Spores may cling to clothing or fur
in some, the cell walls are darkly pigmented, providing resistance to damage by ultraviolet radiation
Some can survive extremes of temperature and pressure.

Although moulds can grow on dead organic matter everywhere in nature, their presence is visible to the unaided eye only when they form large colonies. A mould colony is not a discrete organism but an interconnected network of hyphae called a mycelium.

In artificial environments such as buildings, humidity and temperature are often stable enough to foster the growth of mould colonies, commonly seen as a downy or furry coating growing on food or other surfaces.

When conditions do not enable growth, moulds may remain alive in a dormant state, depending on the species, within an extensive temperature range.

The different mould species vary enormously in their tolerance to temperature, humidity and pressure extremes.

Certain moulds can survive harsh conditions such as the snow-covered soils of Antarctica, refrigeration, highly acidic solvents, anti-bacterial soap and even petroleum products such as jet fuel.
Xerophilic moulds can grow in relatively dry, salty, or sugary environments.

What is asthma?

Asthma is a disease of the airways – which are the breathing tubes that carry air into our lungs. An overreaction of our immune system triggers asthma. How do you go about cleaning your split system?

Firstly, we recommend that professional tradespeople carry out any service that requires handling electrical equipment, connection or disconnection or climbing heights.

Steps to clean the internal coils

The simplest thing you can do is

Open the front door of the split system to expose the filters
Remove the filters
Very carefully use the SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover to spray the silvery fins; repeat as many times as you need for them to appear clean (periodically check that the machine’s drain pipe does not get clogged, and if so, clear it)
Using a second spray bottle filled with clean bottled water, rinse off the fins, ensuring the water you are using drains properly through the standard drain tube.
Allow to drip dry for 10 minutes.
Apply a fine mist of SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover and let the air dry. Coils should now look clean.

Get the following products to commence your clean

1x SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover
2x SAN-AIR Split System Sanitizer OR 2 x SAN-AIR Mould Gone (for a longer-lasting dosage)

Now for the filters

Take the filters to the laundry sink and wash well with water
Shake outside or in the sink to remove most of the water
Use SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover to spray the filters, and allow them to sit for 5-10 minutes
Then shake excess solution free and rinse off with water
Repeat step 3, shake excess solution off, then allow to air dry
Use any spare SAN-AIR Surface Mould Remover to wipe down the outside of the split system
Replace the filters (Before you do replace filters, make sure you have not wet accidentally any electrical part of the machine. If so, seek professional help)
Close the cover of the device and run the air-conditioner for 10 minutes to encourage drying out

Between cleans

After completing step 8 above, install a SAN-AIR Split System Sanitizer pack behind the filter or SAN-AIR Mould Gone on top of the machine (replace these every 8-12 weeks for ongoing mould prevention)

How often to clean?

Every four months for the best healthy air, mainly if you always use the machine. e
